Project Overview
A leading snack food brand needed durable stainless steel underground drainage piping for its incoming bulk raw material project.
304 stainless steel is much less susceptible to corrosion than cast iron, has a higher temperature rating than DWV PVC, and is more durable than CPVC. Using it for drainage is often impractical, though, because of high material cost, long lead times, and project schedule constraints.
Challenges & Objectives
- Provide durable stainless steel drainage piping for an underground application.
- Control material cost and avoid the long lead times typical of 304 stainless drainage systems.
- Protect the project schedule on a capital project with a fixed completion window.
Our Solution
- Magna custom fabricated sch. 40 304 stainless steel butt-weld drain piping in place of sch. 10 stainless steel thin wall hub and spigot piping.
- Our CAD detailing department prepared the piping details so each assembly could be built and checked before it left the shop.
- In-house fabrication in a controlled environment replaced much of the on-site assembly and welding.
Results & Benefits
- The customer received a heavier-wall, more durable system for 20% less than the competing proposal.
- The duration of this scope was cut by 50%: 7 weeks via on-site assembly and welding versus 3.5 weeks using our fabrication facility.
